Reach to save and transform
Zion Sewa is a Christian charitable organisation based in Lucknow.
We exist to transform the communities in practical and tangible ways regardless of caste, colour and creed.
Uncle Rolly Singh & Aunty Salomi Singh
Uncle Rolly comes from a humble background, he lost his parents at an early age but by God’s grace persevered to complete his schooling and to eventually get his Aeronautical technical training from I.T.I. Dehradun. In 1972 he began working at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Lucknow and soon after met a Christian who shared the gospel with him and on that day he trusted in Christ for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He soon became an active member of a church in Lucknow.
Quickly, Christ’s love for Rolly in the face of his own life challenges and difficulties and how the Lord helped and sustained him in all that, compelled him to love others like his Saviour. He got involved in various activities in his church, and eventually resigned in 1979 from his job to move to Barabanki along with his wife Aunty Salomi to serve God and people with the love of Christ. Over time they both began to help people with their spiritual, mental, physical and social needs. This led them to start Zion Sewa in 2001 to help people to this end.
Below are few of our projects
Instead of taking students out of the families and sending them to a childrens home, we kind of adopt students by assisting families that are in need by providing them financial support so that they can send their kids to school, provide for after-school tuition, help with their health, hygiene and nutrition needs. Under this project the complete needs of a student is taken care of which a regular student would require and the students can continue to stay with their own families while adequate assistance is provided for their education, medical, health & hygiene expenses etc.
We also provide financial scholarship for needy students who can't afford education. The scholarship often includes their tuition fees, books and school supplies. In addition we occasionally run educational training programmes for these students. We also offer free after school tutions to the student of community. This project ensures that kids have a bright future because of the education that they get which they would not have been able to afford otherwise.
Many people are often taken advantage of by unscrupulous people in the community. This is why we seek to bring awareness to people about common problems and their simple solutions. Our awareness programmes include: anti-dowry, anti-child marriages, the use of toilets, disease awareness, and leprosy awareness programmes etc. or helping people to find a proper lawyer to help in their case.
Like our saviour, we seek to be an advocate, standing in the gap for those who are in need and oppressed. This may take the form of our staff educating them about their rights, helping them avail medical help at government hospitals, applying for available government schemes for the benefit of the community. There's an old saying that goes like this,"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." So we try to help develop skills, confidence and competence of needy people so that they can help themselves rather than being dependent on others for life. This project trains people in specific skills that can either help them to earn money, increase their livelihood, or grow in confidence. These skills include: sewing & tailoring skills, better farming practices, short-term english speaking courses, career counselling, interview skill training, and computer education.
Many people who live in villages often lack proper medicine and medical facilities. While we don't do major medical proceedures, we organise free medical and dental camps with the help of volunteer doctors & trained medical professionals. Our free initial checkups often help people realize that they need a proper doctor or a proper dentist. We then give them clear and easy steps on how to futher consult a doctor or a dentist, and encourage them to do so. We often provide financial aid to poor patients to seek further maedical help. Zion Sewa's volunteers have often provided practical help such as taking patients to the hospital, consulting with specialists, staying over at the hospitals to provide care for the patients, and even donating their own blood at many ocassion.
We bring young people from different parts of North India and seek to strengthen their lives by imparting ethical and moral teachings based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We give them an opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds, and discover their future potential as they express their creativity in various activities during the camp such as songs, music, drama, skits, games and various forms of competitions etc. We have classes on personality development, career counselling, issues facing young people and we hope these camps will equip young people to face life better and also hopefully help to prepare future leaders for the community.
We provide hostel facilities for young men who are pursuing graduate and post-graduate studies in local colleges so that they have a "home away from home". A good environment to study is provided for them, discipline is inclucated in them, leadership skills developed through various training programmes and a sense of responsibility towards family, community and the society is imparted to them. We build lasting relationships with the students through senior staff/volunteers of Zion Sewa who act as mentors and guides to these young men and counsel them through life issues, hoping that these young men will become future leaders for the community.
It is unfortunate when homes, crops and entire villages are destroyed or adversely affected by flood, fire, or extreme cold. When sadly this does happen, we have provided people with food and relief materials. In the bitter cold winter season we have tried to provide poor people with clothing and blankets. We have also helped rebuild houses destroyed in fire ond helped repair houses in dilapidated conditions for few poor and needy families. In these small ways we are trying to provide succour to the suffering and struggling people of our community.
We strive to help those who are physically challenged with equipement that will assist them in their daily mundane routine. Sometimes we provide tri-cycles or wheelchairs for those that can't or struggle to walk, crutches for those with hurt limbs, and other needs. We want to help and alleviate pain and suffering as much as we can within our means and available resources. Physically challenged people are always warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate in the various activites organised by Zion Sewa.
